Poppy: The Whirlwind Pup

Oh, the joys of puppy parenthood! We quickly rediscovered the whirlwind that is owning a pup. Tilly, our 5 year old, was the picture of calm compared to the bundle of energy that was a 2 month old Poppy. Mornings were a delightful chaos, with poppy, ever the hungry Labrador, deciding that my feet and Tilly’s tail were the prefect breakfast buffet. Those puppy teeth? Sharp as ever! 😂

As usual, the dogs accompanied my husband to work, where they had ample space to roam. One da, while they were contentedly watching the workmen, one of them approached with a black Labrador puppy and cheekily asked “Is this yours?” Poppy, ever the curious explorer, had decided to get a closer look, but thankfully, she was still safe.

Another memorable day was when we picked up a new car. After feeding the dogs, we left them snoozing in their beds, feeling quite pleased with ourselves. But in less than an hour, we returned to find a half-empty bag of dry puppy food scattered across the kitchen floor and a very satisfied Poppy sprawled on her back with a comically round belly! Her thirst from the dry food only made her belly expand further, creating a rather unfortunate cycle. The vet advised us to prevent her from eating her own sick, which a gross as it sounds, is a Labrador trait. So, we had a bit of a situation on our hands. As the day went on, we watched her belly shrink back to normal and decided to skip her teatime meal. That didn’t go over well, and despite our better judgement, we gave her a tiny bit more, just for some piece and quiet! From then on she was know as greedy Poppy! I would note that Poppy, as per most Labradors seemed to inhale her food in seconds, Tilly on the other hand seemed to pick up each piece of kibble so it took her ages to eat her food, much to Poppys annoyance, it was like Tilly was teaching her about patience.

Once Poppy was old enough, we enrolled her in training classes at a local club. She started with puppy like skills, moved onto foundations classes, and then breezed through her kennel club Bronze, Silver and Gold classes, all before her first birthday!

And now, Poppys first adventure in our caravan awaits! Can’t wait to share how that escapade unfolds! 😂😂
